NPP landslide fulfills March 2022 ‘Aragalaya’ mandate – IRES Exec.Dir.
Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Reforms and Electoral Studies [IRES] Manjula Gajanayake said that the result achieved in Thursday’s (14) Parliamentary Election represents the electoral mandate of the March 2022 youth uprising known as the ‘Aragalaya’.
The Elections monitor said, this was the first time that a single political Party won a two-thirds majority in Parliament, after the Preferential Representation (PR) system was introduced in 1989. He said that it was a hard task to win a two-thirds majority under the PR system.
Gajanayake said that it was his view that the people gave the NPP this overwhelming mandate because the NPP had not taken in any political crossovers! He added that the NPP policy was greatly praised by all Sri Lankans, irrespective of caste, creed and ethnicity, and showed their appreciation through their franchise on 14th November. He said that the NPP was the first Party to win the confidence of voters in the North, South, East and West of the island.
The IRES boss said that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake should introduce Constitutional reforms which are long overdue and much looked forward to by the masses.
