Punished student in Wennappuwa dies after three months

The 16-year-old girl from a school in Wennappuwa who was receiving treatment at the Ragama Teaching Hospital for head injuries, allegedly caused due to an assault by two teachers has passed away recently.

She had been in the hospital for over three months.The incident occurred on August 9 when the teachers punished the student and another two classmates for taking over 20 minutes to return to the classroom. The teachers reportedly hit her and made her kneel after accusing her of giving conflicting answers about the delay.

It has been revealed in the police investigation that the teacher in charge of the class had beaten the three female students with her hand. Later, the deputy principal of the school also inquired about the incident and hit the deceased student in the face with her hand and made her kneel in the sun.

The deceased student then had fainted and then the two suspected teachers had taken the student into the classroom and placed her on a bench and had called her parents. The parents had admitted the student to Marawila hospital.

According to the post-mortem report of the deceased student, which was conducted at the Ragama General Hospital, the death occurred due to a complication caused by excessive bleeding caused by the bursting of a vein in the brain.

Regarding this incident, the two female teachers have stated in the police complaint that for about twenty minutes of the period, the students had been missing and when questioned they had made contradictory statements regarding the absence. The teachers have said, they hit the student’s in their legs and made them kneel down.

The two teachers involved aged 39 and 57, were initially arrested and remanded. They were later released on bail in September but were re-arrested on November 14 following the student’s death.

Police are conducting further investigations.
