Senior Prof. Rathnayaka appointed Ruhuna University’s Competent Authority

An extraordinary Gazette notification was issued yesterday appointing Senior Prof.R.M.U.S.K.Rathnayaka to be the Competent Authority for the purpose of exercising, performing and discharging in lieu of Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna from today.

The Gazette notification,issued by Prime Minister Dr.Harini Amarasuriya says, she has made the appointment by virtue of the powers vested in her by Section 20(4)(b) of the Universities Act, No. 16 of 1978 as the Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Minister.

Dr.Amarasuriya says the decision had been made on being satisfied that the administration of the University of Ruhuna have been seriously dislocated and that the authorities of the said University have failed to restore normal conditions.

Senior Prof. R.M.U.S.K. Rathnayaka, the Competent Authority will be vested with powers for the purpose of exercising, performing and discharging in lieu of Vice-Chancellor of the Ruhuna University.

In the recent past there have been protests by academic, non-academic staff, and students of the Ruhuna University demanding the removal of Vice-Chancellor Prof.Sujeewa Amarasena.

Investigations into allegations against the Vice-Chancellor have been initiated by the Education Ministry.
