With the record rainfall of 284 mm experienced during the past 24 hours in Mahiyangana and surrounding areas, all sluice gates (all seven) of the Rathkindha Reservoir had to be opened, the officer in charge of the reservoir, Deeptha Jayasekera said.
He said that as a result of the torrential rains affecting the area, the water level of the reservoir has been going up gradually and the sluice gates had to be opened thus for the protection of the reservoir.
There are seven sluice gates in the Rathkindha reservoir. Six of these gates were opened two and half metres each and the remaining gate was opened one metre.
He said that accordingly, a volume of 450 cubic metres of water per second is being released through the sluice gates.
Several paddy lands located below the reservoir have been inundated due to the sluice gates being opened and Jayasekera emphasised that people should be alert, since the houses on low lands and roadways could report floods.
