Cabinet Spokesperson, Health and Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa has stated that commemorative events associated with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are not permissible in Sri Lanka.
The Minister highlighted that the LTTE remains a banned organisation under Sri Lankan law. As such, any event featuring LTTE symbols, uniforms, or images of its members is strictly prohibited. He was responding to a question by a journalist at the weekly Cabinet media briefing held yesterday at the Government Information Department.
“People from any part of the country have the right to commemorate their deceased relatives,” the Minister explained. However, he emphasised that such events must not be misinterpreted or used as a platform to celebrate the LTTE.
The government remains firm in its stance that there is no room for any form of celebration that glorifies the LTTE, he reiterated, while urging compliance with the law.
