Incessant rain renders thousands homeless in Ampara District

Heavy showers over the last four days in the entire Ampara District has made thousands homeless and have been evacuated to safer shelters.

According to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) in Ampara, 73,108 persons from 23,317 families were affected and displaced from their homes and relocated to their relatives and religious places in their areas. Addalaichenai, Akkaraipattu, Pottuvil Divisional Secretary Divisions have been very badly affected. In Addalaichenai DS Divisions alone 26,672 persons from 7,256 families were affected, while 15,957 persons from 5,128 families were affected and made homeless. In Pottuvil DS Division 10,292 from 2,962 families were badly affected. Kalmunai, Sammanthurai and Alayadivembu Divisions too are the other affected areas in the District, where 3,779, 3,216 and 1,604 persons respectively, were affected according to DMC Deputy Director M.A.C.M. Riyas.

District Secretary Chinthaka Abeywickrema instructed all his Divisional Secretaries to extend their full support to the flood affected victims. Meanwhil, philanthropists, well-wishers and Social Services Organisations voluntarily extending a helping hand to the flood victims by way of cooked meals and dry rations.

Meanwhile, another death, that of a farmer,was also reported from Amparai. Also, a small bridge at Maddupallai, along the Kalmunai- Akkaraipattu Road (near Kali Odai Bridge) collapsed due to the floods curtailing transport to and from Kalmunai and Akkaraipattu.
