HIV infection high among young persons – Physician

HIV infection among young people has increased due to factors such as finding partners through mobile phones and online platforms, as well as lack of proper sexual education.

Programme Director, Community Health physician Dr. Vindya Kumarapeli said 15 percent of the HIV cases reported last year were young people between the ages of 15 and 24.

“Last year, 694 new HIV infected patients were reported in our country. Looking at the data, it is clear that the number of newly infected people with HIV is increasing rapidly. Around 15 percent of new cases are between the ages of 15 and 24” she added.

She also said that data shows addiction to certain intoxicant drugs too lead to an increase in new infections among young people.
