Cuba to assist Govt’s dengue eradication drive

Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa has decided to use the Cuban Government’s expertise, technical tools and experience in the new Government’s programme to completely control dengue in the country.

Cuban assistance will be sought to strengthen related treatment services, control mosquito-borne transmission and effective use of medicine in this regard.

The matter was discussed during a recent meeting between the Minister Dr. Jayatissa, and the Cuban Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Andres Marcelo Gonzales Gorrido at the Health Ministry.

The Cuban ambassador explained the success of Cuba in controlling the dengue epidemic and said that the Cuban Government is willing to share the necessary expertise and technical knowledge for public health programmes aimed at eliminating the dengue epidemic in Sri Lanka.

The ambassador also informed the Health Minister about some of the products used by Cuba to control mosquito larvae.

Emphasising that the Health Ministry has implemented a formal programme to control the spread of dengue mosquitoes in Sri Lanka and to strengthen treatment services, the Minister pointed out that inter-party coordination between the two countries is very important to strengthen these activities.

The minister also expressed his gratitude for the Cuban Government’s willingness to exchange Cuban expertise and technical knowledge for dengue control activities in the country.

The meeting was held with the aim of obtaining the continuous support of the Cuban Government for the programme being carried out by Sri Lanka for the control of dengue and strengthening the long-term diplomatic relations and friendship between the two countries.

Acting Health Ministry Secretary Wathsala Priyadarshani, Health Services Director General Dr. Asela Gunawardena, Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Hasitha Thisera, Dengue Control Unit Director Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, and Cuban Embassy’s First Secretary Maribel Duarte Gonzalez were also present.
