Over 291,000 have left for work abroad till Nov. 30 – SLBFE

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment Bureau has registered 22,685 Sri Lankans in November 2024 for work abroad, the SLBFE said.

In the 11 months ending November 2024, 291,267 people went abroad for work, which is an increase of 6.9% compared to 2023. Accordingly, from January to November 2023, 274,265 people have left for work.

From January to November of this year, 178,914 people have registered and gone abroad under self-employment finding system and 112,853 people have registered through foreign employment agencies and left for work abroad. 210,108 left for skilled jobs and 81,159 left for semi-skilled jobs.

Among the 2024 worker departures, there are 172,746 male workers and 118,521 female workers.

Meanwhile, from January to November of this year, the largest number of people have gone abroad for work to the state of Kuwait, with the number reaching 71,210. Also 48,083 people have left to UAE for jobs, 45,008 to Saudi Arabia and 43,104 to Qatar.

In addition 9,146 left for Israel, 7,983 to Japan and 6,925 for South Korea.

Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment Chairman Koshala Wickramasinghe said a special programme has been prepared to provide necessary facilities to expatriate workers in a more efficient and professional manner.

He also mentions that the SLBFE is working to get more job opportunities for Sri Lankans from countries like Japan, South Korea and Israel. The chairman requests job aspirants to choose the right path and not fall prey to fraudsters. Wickramasinghe further stated that he hopes to launch a special programme to assist the children of migrant workers.
