US Ambassador Julie Chung said in the presence of the Chief Prelate of the Malwatte Chapter, that the US State Department decided to impose sanctions on two Sri Lankans who held high positions during the previous Government and their families as a measure to curb corruption.

The US Ambassador said this when the Chief Prelate of the Malwatte Chapter, Most Venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayake Thera inquired about media reports indicating that two strongmen of the previous Government had been banned from entering USA.

Ambassador Chung visited the Malwatte Maha Vihara yesterday afternoon (11) and paid a courtesy call on the Mahanayake Thera and informed the Malwatte Chief Prelate about the projects implemented by the US in Sri Lanka.

She emphasised that the two Sri Lankans who have been sanctioned by the American Government had been accused of corruption and that the related decision was reached after a year-long investigation.

The Malwatte Chief Prelate said that since a good Government that can be trusted has come to power, he believes that the current Government will get more support from the US Government than before.

The US Ambassador said that the current President came to power with a large mandate and that the National People’s Power (NPP) has a two-thirds majority in Parliament as well and that the US cooperated with every Government that was in power.

She also said that the US will provide maximum support for the programme of the current Government led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to fight fraud and corruption.

The Mahanayake Thera said that due to the rain, crops of the farmers have been destroyed and even some of their houses have been completely destroyed and inquired whether there was any possibility of helping them out.

The US Ambassador said that President Dissanayake expects the support of the US Government in the technical sector for agriculture and will take measures for that.

Chung said that the US worked to provide fertiliser to farmers during the economic crisis and that the programme of providing lunch to rural school children is expected to be extended to urban school children as well.
