Trade, Commerce, Food Security, and Cooperative Development Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe said that the Government will ensure there will be no shortages of essential goods in the market during the festive season.
He also said that various institutions and individuals have been involved in creating artificial shortages of goods in the market.
Speaking on the matter, the Minister stated that price increases during festive seasons are a common market occurrence.
However, he assured that every necessary step would be taken to stabilise the situation and address the shortages effectively. The Minister further mentioned plans to mitigate the shortages through targetted actions and emphasised resolving the issues through dialogue.
“We are committed to ensuring that the public does not face difficulties due to such actions. The Government is actively intervening through its institutions to prevent shortages in the market. Specifically, steps are being taken to reduce the prices of essential goods by 25 percent through Sathosa. The Government will implement the necessary measures during the festive season to alleviate these issues,” the Minister added.
