Twenty seven more Sri Lankans who were forcibly held in a cybercrime camp in Myanmar were rescued and brought to the Katunayake Airport on Monday (16). They had been rescued from the camp and taken to Thailand, from where they arrived on a SriLankan Airlines flight UL-405 from Bangkok Airport .

Ven.Maligawila Assaji Thera, who had taken the initiative for this, had also arrived at the Katunayake Airport on the same flight as this group of Sri Lankans.

Speaking to media personnel, the Venerable Thera said:I went to that camp in Myanmar on my own and after a huge effort of 14 days, I rescued this group of Sri Lankans and brought them to the Thai border and handed them over. Not only that, I also rescued six Nepalese nationals, a Russian and a Malaysian national among them.

These youngsters had been suffering in these camps for two, two and a half years. There are 14 other Sri Lankans still remaining in those camps.

“I reject the news being spread by some media outlets that I received money to save these children. If the President or Prime Minister of our Government requests me to save the remaining Sri Lankans, I am ready to come forward and act,” the Venerable Thera added. A large crowd carrying a banner had arrived at the Katunayake Airport to welcome the monk. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) had shouldered the burden of bringing this group of Sri Lankans from Thailand to Katunayake Airport and from there to their homes.

Accordingly, the organisation had intervened to bring back to the country, eight Sri Lankans who were being held in cyber camps in Myanmar on April 18, 22 on September 6 and 27 and on December 16.
