The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the import of up to 30,000 metric tonnes of non-iodized salt to address a potential shortage anticipated in the first quarter of 2025, Cabinet Spokesman Health and Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.
The State Trading Corporation (STC) will oversee the import of non-iodised raw salt, which will then be distributed to local salt manufacturers.
Speaking at this week’s Cabinet media briefing, Minister Jayatissa said this decision follows a significant decline in domestic salt production, attributed to adverse weather conditions that have disrupted local manufacturing processes.
The Minister further said that in response to the production setbacks, private companies have submitted proposals to the Government, seeking permission to import salt to mitigate the potential shortage.
