Even in the backdrop of an unprecedented economic crisis, the Sri Lanka Police had spent Rs. 1,491 million more in 2023 than in previous years to provide VIP security to non-ministers and non-MPs, Police Headquarters information reveals.
Police Headquarters also disclosed that the security had been provided contrary to the circular No. 2687/2020 of the Inspector General of Police dated September 30, 2020 regarding the provision of security to VIPs.
VIP protection had been given to the defeated MPs as well as relatives and friends of various politicians.
Also, some politicians had been given special treatment by providing more security personnel than approved, as well as advance vehicles, Police Headquarters sources said.
As on January 1, 2022, the number of officers attached to the VIP Security Division was 3,884 and the number had to be increased to 4,859 by September 2023. Police information revealed that it was due to having to provide security to a group of non-VIPs.
Police Headquarters’ data revealed that the average expenses of the VIP Security Division during the period 2018–2022 was Rs 4,342 million; but in 2023, the cost rose to Rs 5,833 million due to providing security to non-VIP groups.
