Three candidates, 10 others probed for failure to submit financial reports

According to the provisions of the Election Regulation Act, the Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau has started an investigation against three presidential candidates and 10 people, including the party secretaries nominated by the presidential candidates, for failing to properly submit election income and expenditure reports.

According to a complaint sent by the Election Commission (EC) to the Inspector General of Police, the Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau has started this investigation on the order of the Acting Inspector General of Police.According to information from the Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau, the presidential candidates who are been investigated are P. Ariyanethiram, Ven. Battaramulla Seelarathana Thera and Sarath Keerthirathna.

Already investigations are underway against Ariyawansa Dissanayake, General Secretary of Democratic United National Front, which named Prasanga Suranjeeva Anoj de Silva as their Presidential candidate; Sarachchandra Weerawardena, Secretary of the Eksath Lanka Podujana Party which nominated J. Weerasinghe Mudiyanselage Janaka Priyantha Kumar Ratnayake as their Presidential candidate; Samabima Party Secretary Deepthi Kumara Gunaratne which named Namal Ajith Rajapaksha as their Presidential candidate; General Secretary of Ven. Battaramulla Seelarathana Thera’s party; and M. Hithayulla, Secretary of United Democratic Alliance which named Abubaker Mohammed Inshaf as their Presidential candidate.

Five voters who nominated five Independent Presidential candidates are also under the police scanner. Among the candidates who contested this year’s Presidential Election, 35 had submitted their income and expenditure report to the Election Commission before October 13.

Three candidates and 10 party secretaries and voters who nominated 10 independent candidates, had not given their income and expenditure reports.
