CID probes Whatsapp group impersonating Minister Sunil Handunnetti for financial fraud

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has started an investigation into a money collection scam run by a group of Sri Lankans abroad through a WhatsApp group posing as Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Sunil Handunnetti.

This investigation has been started according to a complaint made by Minister Handunnetti to the CID yesterday (24).

In his complaint, the Minister has even given a phone number used by fraudsters impersonating him as well as an account number used to withdraw money.

The complaint made to the CID stated that a fake advertisement with a fake signature stating that there will be a meeting with the Sri Lankan party members abroad with the Minister on January 5 through WhatsApp has also been distributed. The Minister has also stated in his complaint that his name, party name and his photograph have been used for fraudulent activity.
