72,000 Metric Tonnes of rice imported – Customs

Customs sources said that 72,000 Metric Tonnes of rice had been imported as of yesterday morning (27) as a measure taken by the Government to manage the rice scarcity in the market.

According to the Customs Media Division, 72,000 Metric Tonnes of imported rice had been cleared through Customs as of yesterday morning. This imported rice includes Kekulu and Nadu rice. Of this, 32,000 Metric Tonnes are Kekulu rice whilst 40,000 Metric Tonnes are Nadu rice. As the Government has taken steps to extend the rice import permit until January 10, more rice is expected to reach the country in the coming days.
