0 4

The Sri Lanka Customs reports that 75,000 Metric Tonnes of rice have been imported and cleared as of yesterday morning (29). Out of this total, 32,000 Metric Tonnes are Samba rice and 43,000 Metric Tonnes are Nadu rice.

Additionally, a special procedure is in place for clearing imported rice consignments, as stated by the Customs Media Spokesperson Seevali Arukgoda. The Government has extended the deadline for importing rice without a permit until January 10. This measure is part of the Government’s response to the ongoing rice shortage in the country. Since December 4, the private sector has been allowed to import rice. However, the rice stocks that the Government promised to import have not yet arrived in the country.
