Professional bodies demand details of MPs who obtained concessionary loans from 1994
Representatives of a professional’s alliance have demanded the disclosure of the information about the loans taken by parliamentarians on a concessionary basis in the last three decades from 1994 to 2024.
Sri Lanka Construction Association President Susantha Liyanaarachchi said an alliance including his organisation representing professionals will be seeking information under the Right to Information Act regarding details on the amounts of loans taken by Parliamentarians from 1994 till now under low interest rates and other concessionary measures, the number of borrowers and the purpose of loans and whether they have duly repaid loans.
He also said that as a first step, today (30) at 10 a.m, a group of representatives including himself will visit the Bank of Ceylon headquarters and present a document to obtain this information from the bank.
Apart from this, he also said that his alliance will take action to reveal facts to the country about the loans received under various facilities by public representatives who represented parliament in the last 30 years from other state banks and institutions.
He said 759,000 small and medium scale entrepreneurs of the country are currently facing difficulties in paying their bank loans.“Out of these, 263,000 are facing problems in the construction industry and have become very helpless today,” he added.
Liyanaarachchi declared that his alliance aim is to reveal to the country whether MPs or ministers have taken loans on low interest terms and concessionary measures at a time when the business community and the public are facing difficulties due to the economic crisis.
