Govt aims to provide energy at affordable prices to consumers – Minister

Energy Minister Engineer Kumara Jayakody said that the Government’s aim is to reduce energy costs and provide energy at affordable prices to consumers.

“Sri Lanka is one of the countries with the highest energy costs in the region. The Government’s aim is to change that situation and provide energy at affordable prices,” he added.

The Minister expressed these views during a discussion with the investors in the renewable energy sector held at the Energy Ministry. At the meeting attention was drawn on the progress and related issues of medium and large-scale renewable energy projects implemented under the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority.

“To develop the country and to expedite the development, energy costs must be reduced. That is what we need to do. We have high hopes to lean on renewable energy greatly since renewable energy can be utilised for reducing energy cost,” he added.

He noted that the private sector is given ample space to invest in energy generation especially in the renewable energy sector.

“We are working to follow a win-win approach that is fair to both the Government and the investors. Understanding the values and expectations of the investors, as a Government, we are working to provide prompt solutions to their problems and achieve the country’s energy goals,” Minister Jayakody said.

At the meeting the problems related to those projects and the current status and progress of those projects as well as many other relevant issues were discussed with representatives of institutions involved in renewable energy projects.

It was revealed that there is a high potential to add more than 500 megawatts of capacity to the national power grid in the next two year period through these renewable energy projects.

The Minister instructed the Government officials who participated in the discussion to work together with the relevant Government institutions to resolve the issues that arose and to take the necessary policy decisions very quickly.
