Approximately 780 metric tons of rice ordered by the Government reached the island yesterday (30), State Trading Corporation Chairman Ravindra Fernando said.
This stock of rice has been imported from India and the people will have the opportunity to buy it at an affordable price through Sathosa outlets across the country, he said.
The Chairman announced that private importers have been allowed to import rice only till January 3.
Meanwhile, 75,000 metric tons of imported rice has been cleared through the Customs till yesterday. A total of 32,000 metric tons of Kekulu rice and 43,000 metric tons of Nadu rice have been cleared through Customs, Customs Spokesman Seevali Arukgoda said.
He also said that about 12,000 tons of imported rice is to be unloaded at the Colombo Port.
