The Government has announced an increase in the allowance for kidney patients from Rs. 7,500 to Rs. 10,000, as proposed in the recent Budget.  This announcement comes amidst reports that some recipients had been notified that their payments would be discontinued after December. However, the Government reassures them that despite ongoing administrative reviews by regional secretariats, no benefits for kidney patients will be withdrawn.

The Government has highlighted recent increases in various social welfare allowances. These include raising the disability allowance by Rs. 3,000, increasing the Rs. 7,500 allowance to Rs. 10,000, and raising the Rs. 15,000 allowance to Rs. 17,500. Additionally, benefits for pregnant mothers have been increased from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 25,000.

Various social welfare initiatives have also been implemented, such as a Rs. 6,000 allowance for school supplies for children from low-income families and increased aid for fishermen. According to the Ministry of Social Security, there are currently 47,244 registered kidney patients in the country, with the number expected to rise. The timely updating of data regarding kidney patients is emphasised as crucial. The Government reiterates its commitment to ensuring that no registered kidney patient will face a reduction in allowances and will keep the public informed through official notifications.
