Jayewardenepura Hospital to be revamped – Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa

Health and Media Minister, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said that steps have been initiated to revamp all services at Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital (SJGH) under a new plan aimed at expanding Treatment services efficiently and effectively. He expressed these views at an extensive discussion with the SJGH Board of Management, during a special visit marking the SJGH’s 40th anniversary.

Established in 1984, with a capacity of 1,001 beds, as a donation from the Japanese government, the SJGH is constructed in line with a Japanese architectural design. The Minister’s visit included an inspection of the Hospital Wards and premises, focusing on the provision of patient care, the requirements of the staff, and the services offered.

Minister Jayatissa’s discussions with Hospital Staff to address ongoing operational challenges, explore their suggestions, and incorporate their ideas into the Hospital’s future development. He emphasised the importance of further enhancing facilities and services for In-Patients and Out-Patients, including introducing new services to meet evolving Healthcare needs.

Currently, SJGH operates as one of the country’s oldest and largest State enterprises offering Tertiary Care services. Highlighting its non-profit approach, Minister Jayatissa underscored the Hospital’s commitment to providing affordable and accessible Healthcare to the public.

The Minister urged the Hospital’s Staff to build on its four decades of experience and deliver consistent, high-quality Healthcare services. He called for decisive leadership and efficient decision-making to ensure the Hospital’s continued growth as a model institution for quality and efficient care.

Deputy Minister of Health and Media, Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni, Director General of Health Services, Dr. Asela Gunawardena,  SJGH Chairman Dr. Jayanga Tilakaratne, and SJGH Director Dr. Rathnasiri Hewage, along with Specialist Doctors, Nurses, and other Health Staff, were in attendance.
