Compensation for Nuwara Eliya eye complication affected

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a compensation scheme for patients who developed eye-related complications following treatment at the Nuwara Eliya District Hospital.  

This decision was made in response to numerous complaints from patients who suffered adverse effects after undergoing cataract surgery at the hospital.

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal by the Health and Mass Media Minister to pay the compensation 17 patients affected due to the relevant matter based on the said recommendations. A compensation of Rs. 1,000,000 for each for 12 patients and a compensation of Rs.750,000 for two other patients and Rs. 700,000 for one patient and a compensation of Rs.250,000 for two other patients.

Speaking in Parliament, Health and Media Minister Dr.Nalinda Jayatissa acknowledged the gravity of the issue and reassured the public of the government’s commitment to justice. “The health and well-being of our citizens are our top priorities. We are deeply concerned about the incidents at the Nuwara Eliya Hospital and have taken immediate steps to address them,” he said.

Under the newly approved scheme, patients affected by improper treatment will receive financial compensation based on the extent of their vision impairment or other complications. A special review committee will evaluate claims and ensure fair and timely disbursement of funds.

The minister further emphasised the need for stricter monitoring of medical practices at hospitals to prevent such incidents in the future. He assured that investigations are ongoing and that any doctor found guilty of negligence will face disciplinary action.

Dr.Jayatissa urged affected patients to report their cases to facilitate the compensation process efficiently.
