An accident occurred yesterday (17) early morning on the Southern Expressway, at the 138th km post between Aparekka and Beliatta, when a bus carrying Russian tourists collided with a cement-laden lorry, Police said.
Fourteen were injured including 12 Russian tourists, the assistant driver and the tourist guide in the vehicle, killing the driver on the spot. The driver had fallen asleep at the wheel.
The tourist bus had been plying from Colombo towards Tangalle carrying tourists when it collided behind a cement laden lorry which was moving in the same direction. Six of injured tourists were admitted to Tangalle hospital while the others are being treated at Beliatta hospital. The conditions of the tourists admitted to the Beliatta hospital are not serious, hospital sources stated.
However, the some of the victims at Tangalle Hospital have sustained fractures in their legs. Highway Police are investigating.
