Health and Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa directed the State Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing Corporation (SPMC) to take urgent steps to significantly increase the country’s Pharmaceutical production capacity within the next two years. This directive comes amidst challenges in ensuring an uninterrupted supply of essential Medicines to the country’s Healthcare system.

During a visit to the SPMC facility in Ratmalana, Minister Jayatissa emphasised that various factors, including a lack of suppliers, inconsistent deliveries from tender-awarded suppliers, and global supply chain disruptions, have caused shortages in essential Medicines for hospitals. He pointed out that the limited number of registered suppliers has further contributed to the problem.

To address these challenges, the Minister called for the swift importation of necessary raw materials and a detailed review of related issues. He held extensive discussions with officials on identifying weaknesses and improving production capacity to meet the country’s Healthcare demands.

Highlighting the SPMC’s importance as the oldest and largest State-owned Pharmaceutical manufacturing institution in Sri Lanka, the Minister urged the organisation to focus on serving the public rather than profit motives. He also announced plans to expand the network of State-run Pharmacies to ensure wider coverage across the country.

The Minister further engaged in a detailed dialogue with the SPMC Chairman and Board of Directors, emphasising the need for enhanced transparency and efficiency in operations. He also provided guidance on improving Pharmaceutical production, research, raw material procurement, and distribution processes.

Additionally, the Minister addressed institutional responsibilities such as laboratory facilities, pre-production and marketing processes, and human resource development, highlighting the need for better organisational social responsibility.

During the visit, the Minister inspected various sections of the SPMC facility, personally engaging with staff to understand their challenges and discussing ways to overcome them.

SPMC Chairman Prof. Janaka Wijayabandara, General Manager Asanthi Athuraliya, Deputy General Managers, and other staff members, were involved in the discussions.
