0 7

Considerable rainfall has been reported in the Senanayake Samudra in Inginiyagala, Ampara, in addition to waters coming from Moneragala, Bibile and Badulla in the Uva Province.

The water level of the Samudraya has now risen to 109.20 ft. (754,000 acre ft) against the total capacity of 110 ft. (770,000 acre ft.).

Hence, there is possibility of floods occurring in the low-lying areas of the Gal Oya valley situated in Addalaichenai, Akkaraipattu, Ampara, Damana, Eragama, Alayadivembu, Nintavur, Karaitivu, and Sammanthurai DS Divisions.

As a result there is high possibility of the inundation of roads running through the flood plains of the Gal Oya. Residents in those areas and vehicles using roads in these areas have been forewarned of the threat of floods. Simultaneously, the water level of the other tanks in the district – Pallan Oya, Namal Oya, Ambalan Oya, Ekgal Oya, Pannalagma Tank, Kalugala Oya Tank and Kondawattuwana Wewa – are also reaching spill level.

Meanwhile, a flood warning has been issued by Irrigation Director L.S. Sooriyabandara to residents in these areas and to disaster management authorities.
