Highest score of 188 at 2024 Grade 5 schol exam, the lowest compared to previous years – Exams Chief
Examinations Commissioner General Amith Jayasundara said the countrywide highest score obtained by a candidate in the 2024 Grade 5 Scholarship Examination results is 188.
He was speaking at a press conference held at the Examinations Department Auditorium yesterday (24).
Only one student had scored 188 marks while several other candidates have got 187,186 downwards.
“The highest score of 188 this year is relatively lower compared to previous years since the top scores typically exceeded 195 in past examinations. It was significant that a perfect score of 200 was achieved in 2020,” he noted.
However, he attributed this decline to a possible increased difficulty level of the question paper in 2024.
Unlike in previous years, the Examinations Department has decided not to disclose the names of the highest-scoring candidates this year as a measure to minimise the further burden on candidates.
He noted that there should be a proper mechanism to reduce the burden and immense mental pressure placed on 10-year-old students, who face the Grade 5 scholarship examination which is undoubtedly a highly competitive examination in the country.
“Such a situation that creates huge mental pressure on students cannot be commonly found in other countries,” he added.
He further emphasized the importance of finding an alternative to the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination to achieve its objectives without putting undue stress on young children. However until such an alternative is implemented, the present Grade 5 scholarship examination will continue.
The results of the 2024 Grade 5 Scholarship Examination was released online on Thursday (23) and accordingly the highest district cut-off mark is also set at a relatively lower mark this year, which is 143. The 2024 Grade 5 Scholarship Examination was held on September 15 at 2,849 centres across the island with the participation of 319,284 candidates. Of them a total of 51,244 students have achieved marks above the cutoff mark of the exam.
It further said that appeals for the scrutiny of results are requested to be submitted online between January 27 and February 6, 2025.
