Health and Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa has directed attention towards effectively addressing global pandemic challenges by reinforcing epidemic disease prevention and control efforts. Special emphasis has been placed on streamlining vaccination programmes and enhancing the activities of the Family Health Bureau’s Epidemiology Unit, which plays a key role in controlling and preventing communicable diseases in the country.
The Health and Media Minister reviewed the current operations of various divisions within the Epidemiology Unit, during his recent visit. He held discussions with Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Hasitha Tissera and other officials to plan future strategies. The Minister acknowledged the unit’s critical contributions to public health and stressed the importance of addressing identified challenges promptly.
Since its establishment in 1959, the Epidemiology Unit has been led by chief epidemiologists and functions as Sri Lanka’s primary centre for communicable disease surveillance, research and training. The unit also oversees the National Immunisation Programme, one of the country’s most successful public health initiatives.
Dr. Jayatissa emphasised the need to modernise vaccination campaigns, enhance disease surveillance and identify priority areas for pandemic preparedness. He highlighted the significance of integrating advanced technologies and providing hands-on training to staff to ensure a robust response to emerging health threats.
The Minister also recognised the unit’s achievements, including eradicating smallpox and polio and controlling diseases like measles, rubella and neonatal tetanus.
Despite prolonged challenges such as the 30-year civil conflict and the COVID-19 pandemic, the unit has consistently maintained its immunisation and disease control efforts.
During the visit, plans to establish Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were also discussed to facilitate early detection, control and prevention of diseases. Dr. Jayatissa stated that the new CDC would strengthen Sri Lanka’s capacity to address global health emergencies effectively.
Health Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Hasitha Tissera and other medical professionals attended.
