Sri Lanka Rugby imposes strict safety rules on Kandy Sports Club

Sri Lanka Rugby has announced strict measures to safeguard match officials and player safety following incidents at last week’s A-Division League match between Kandy Sports Club and CH & FC.

In an emergency council meeting, the governing body emphasized that hooliganism, intimidation, and misconduct have no place in rugby. Clubs are responsible for the behaviour of individuals at their venues and must take decisive action to prevent future incidents.

Kandy Sports Club has been ordered to submit a detailed match-day security plan. Continued use of Nittawela Stadium will depend on the Tournament Committee’s approval of the plan. Any future breaches could result in matches being played behind closed doors or at alternative venues with adequate security.

Sri Lanka Rugby also expects Kandy Sports Club to identify and ban individuals responsible for threatening safety or tarnishing the sport’s reputation. The body reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring all competitions are safe, professional, and respectful.
