Proposals to charge consumers for street lamps and attempts to impose a time‑use method where one unit is charged at Rs. 67 are blatantly unfair, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said today, criticizing the newly proposed electricity policy of the NPP government.
In a post on ‘X’, Premadasa warned that the policy punishes both consumers and the renewable energy sector, while disproportionately victimizing low‑income earners.
He cautioned that if people refuse to pay for street lamps, it could have a detrimental impact on maintaining law and order.
“Proposals such as charging solar generators based on daytime unit usage must be subjected to public consultation, stressing that the government should ‘walk the talk’ by reducing electricity prices by 33% as promised, instead of increasing them by 11.57%,” the Opposition Leader further argued.
Accusing the administration of “lies, falsehoods, and deception,” Premadasa urged maximum support for the renewable energy sector and immediate relief for consumers. (Newswire)
