0 3

The Supreme Court has ruled that the Parliamentary Pensions (Repeal) Bill does not contain any provisions that are inconsistent with the Constitution, allowing it to be passed by Parliament with a simple majority.

The ruling was communicated to the Speaker in accordance with Article 121(1) of the Constitution, following a legal challenge to the bill.

Announcing the court’s decision in Parliament today (Feb. 6), the Speaker said the Supreme Court had confirmed that none of the bill’s provisions violate constitutional provisions, clearing the way for its enactment.

The Parliamentary Pensions (Repeal) Bill gazetted in January this year, aims to abolish pension entitlements for Members of Parliament and their spouses under the existing Parliamentary Pensions Act.

It received Cabinet and Attorney General approval before being gazetted for presentation in Parliament. (Newswire)
