Daycare centre caretaker remanded after toddler drowns in Embilipitiya

The daycare centre caretaker has been remanded after a 1-year-8-month-old child drowned in a small pond within the premises of a childcare centre in the Embilipitiya area.

According to the police, the incident occurred on March 9 at a daycare centre in the Mulaediyawela–Thorakolayaya area within the Embilipitiya Police Division.

The child, who had been under the care of the daycare centre, drowned in a small pond located inside the premises. CCTV footage allegedly showing the incident has since circulated on social media.

Officers attached to the Embilipitiya Police Station arrested the operator of the daycare centre later that night on suspicion of culpable homicide not amounting to murder due to negligence.

The suspect was produced before court the following day and was ordered remanded until March 18, when the case is scheduled to be taken up again.
