President says statement must be recorded if name mentioned in investigation

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake says if a person’s name is mentioned in an investigation, a statement must be recorded from that individual, underscoring the principle of equality before the law.
“If my name has been mentioned, then shouldn’t a statement be recorded from me? It has to be recorded. If someone’s name is mentioned during an investigation, it is normal to record a statement from that person,” the President said, addressing an event.
He noted that in Sri Lanka, there has been a culture where such moves cause major controversy, but stressed the need to change that mindset.
“Firstly, we have to be below the law. Secondly, we have to be afraid of the law. Whether it is the President or a Grama Niladhari official, everyone should be afraid of the law. There cannot be anyone who isn’t below the law. Despite power, a time of being revered, all of this is irrelevant. This is so as it is essential to drive our country towards a new path,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of building a society where all are equal before the law, the President assured that legal provisions would not be misused
“The law will not be used to obstruct the duties of any state officials. The law will never be used unjustly or for vengeance,” he assured. (Newswire)
