Weather Alert : Advisory issued for heavy rains in several areas today

The highest rainfall has been reported in Kesbewa in the Colombo District, with 204 mm recorded between 08.30 am on Tuesday and 06.30 am today (13).

Veyangoda in the Gampaha District has recorded 145.5 mm of rain, followed by Gilimale in the Rathnapura District with 121.0 mm, during this period. 

Over 100 mm of rain has also been recorded in Wathupitiwala in Gampaha District (105.50, Devitura Estate in the Galle District (102.5), Bandaragama Government Farm in the Kalutara District (102.5), and Horana in the Kalutara District (101.5).  

The Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory for heavy rains in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-western, North-central provinces and Trincomalee, Galle and Matara districts today. 

Per the advisory, effective until 03.30 pm, red alerts have been issued to 17 districts and amber alerts to 08 districts. 

The Met Department states that the prevailing Showery conditions are expected to continue further due to the low-pressure area in the vicinity of Sri Lanka. 

As such, very heavy showers above 200 mm are likely at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Puttalam, Galle and Matara districts. 

Heavy showers of about 100 mm are likely at some places in the Northern and North-central provinces and in the Trincomalee and Kurunegala districts. (Newswire)
