Schools should be places where children feel safe, valued and cared for, in addition to receiving a quality education, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya said on Friday (05).
Addressing a ceremony to hand over the newly constructed three-storey classroom building and auditorium at Samodaya Vidyalaya in Kurunegala, the Prime Minister said the role of schools extends beyond academic instruction and includes creating an environment that nurtures children’s well-being.
“A school should not only be a place where children gain knowledge. It must also be the safest and most loving place for every child,” she said.
Prime Minister also noted that children spend a significant portion of their lives in school and stressed the importance of ensuring that school communities are built on care, compassion and affection.
“The Government’s vision for education is to provide children with the very best. That does not mean buildings alone. The quality and content of education must also meet the highest standards,” she said.
The new classroom building and auditorium were completed within seven months at a cost of Rs. 41 million. Commending those involved in the project, Amarasuriya said the timely completion of the facilities would directly benefit students and support their educational development.
To mark the occasion, the Prime Minister planted a Na sapling within the school premises.
Among those attending the event were Ven. Kithulgolle Gnanarathana Thero, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Namal Karunaratne, Members of Parliament M.K.S. Aslam, Ashoka Gunasekara and Attorney-at-Law Sarath Karunayake, as well as education officials, local government representatives and school principals from the area. (Newswire)
