Namal condemns Governor’s decision to remove Chavakachcheri Vice Chairman

The Governor of the Northern Province has removed Chavakachcheri Urban Council Vice Chairman G. Kishor from both his position as Vice Chairman and his membership of the council through an Extraordinary Gazette notification issued on June 19.
According to the gazette, Governor N. Vethanayahan took the decision following an inquiry conducted by a retired District Judge appointed to investigate matters relating to the Chavakachcheri Urban Council.
The notification states that the Governor determined Kishor was not qualified to continue serving as Vice Chairman under provisions of the Urban Councils Ordinance and ordered his dismissal from both offices with effect from June 24, 2026.
The move has drawn criticism from SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa, who described the removal as a blatant abuse of power and a serious attack on democracy.
In a post on X, Rajapaksa said it was unacceptable to remove an elected representative from both the Vice Chairman’s post and council membership for criticizing a Local Government Commissioner’s circular.
He further alleged that the government was using the powers of the Governor and the state to silence dissent and punish critics, while Provincial Council elections remain delayed. (Newswire)
