Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya today opened the new Medical Faculty complex of the Sabaragamuwa University.

The project has received nearly Rs. 15 billion from Saudi Arabia, while the Sri Lankan Government has contributed around Rs. 2.876 billion.

The 20-acre complex includes hostel facilities for 500 students, a 1,060-seat auditorium, six lecture halls, administrative buildings, a library, cafeteria, staff accommodation and pre-clinical facilities.

Around 750 students are currently studying at the faculty, with nearly 160 students admitted annually for medical education.

The Prime Minister said the new complex marks an important step in strengthening Sri Lanka’s medical education system and improving access to quality healthcare.

Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka Khalid Hamoud Nasser Aldasam Alkahtani and officials from the Saudi Fund for Development also attended the event. (Newswire)
