Dengue cases in Sri Lanka rise past 84,000; death toll at 61

Dengue has claimed 61 lives in Sri Lanka this year, with the total number of reported cases climbing to 84,091 by midnight on July 29, according to the National Dengue Control Unit.

July alone recorded 28,717 infections, making it the worst month so far, followed by June with 21,533 cases. Earlier months saw lower but steady numbers: May (8,590), April (5,651), March (6,013), February (5,721), and January (7,866).

District‑wise, the highest burden was reported from Gampaha (17,850 cases, 21.23%) and Colombo (16,716 cases, 19.88%). Other heavily affected districts include Kandy (5,793), Matara (5,730), and Kalutara (5,493).

By province, the Western Province accounted for more than half of all infections (44,552 cases, 52.98%), followed by the Southern Province with 18,127 cases (21.55%). Central (6,674), Sabaragamuwa (6,898), North Western (4,463), North Central (1,548), and Northern (1,446) provinces reported smaller shares.

Health authorities noted 175 high‑risk Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas during Week 29, with an average of 2,391 new cases reported daily. The case fatality rate remains at 0.07%.

Communities are urged to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and strengthen preventive measures as the outbreak intensifies across the island. (Newswire)
