Stephen Fleming named England Test coach as Joe Root returns as captain

England have appointed former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming as their new men’s Test head coach, while Joe Root has been reappointed as Test captain. 

Fleming replaces Brendon McCullum as England’s red-ball coach after McCullum moved into a wider role overseeing the team’s white-ball cricket operations. The former New Zealand skipper arrives with a strong coaching record, having guided Chennai Super Kings to multiple Indian Premier League titles during his long tenure as head coach. 

Root, who previously led England in 64 Tests before stepping down in 2022, returns to the captaincy role as the team enters a new phase. The experienced batter remains England’s leading Test run-scorer and will work alongside Fleming to rebuild the side ahead of future challenges. 

Fleming’s appointment marks his first major international coaching role. His immediate task will be to maintain England’s aggressive style of play while bringing stability to the Test team following the departure of McCullum and the end of Ben Stokes’ captaincy tenure.  (Newswire)
