0 1

The Department of Irrigation has issued a Red‑level flood warning for the Mahaweli River Basin, cautioning of a possible major flood situation over the next 48 hours.

The alert, released at 1:00 pm today (03), remains valid until 1:00 pm on Wednesday, August 05.

According to the Irrigation Department, heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas, forecasts of further showers, and the potential opening of spillway gates at the Kotmale Reservoir have heightened the risk of flooding.

The warning applies to low‑lying areas in the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Udunuwara, Udapalatha, Yatinuwara, Doluwa, Kotmale, Pasbage, Ganga Ihala Korale, Pasbage Korale, Gangawata Korale, Harispattuwa, and Pathadumbara.

Residents in these regions have been strongly advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions, while disaster management authorities have been requested to implement proactive measures.

The Department urged the public to exercise extreme caution and stay alert as further rainfall is anticipated. (Newswire)
