Sajith seeks Parliamentary Select Committee on court delays and judicial reforms

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has called for the appointment of a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) to examine delays in court proceedings and other challenges facing the judicial system.

Issuing a special statement, Premadasa said the Government’s proposed amendments relating to the retirement age of judges have created uncertainty and opposition, alleging that key stakeholders had not been adequately consulted.

He said the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) should brief all Members of Parliament on the proposed changes and had been invited to Parliament on Wednesday at 3.00 p.m. to explain the implications of the amendments.

Premadasa also said he had requested the Speaker’s support in facilitating the briefing for all 225 MPs, adding that a broader discussion involving legal experts and legislators was necessary before any changes are enacted.

The Opposition Leader further proposed the establishment of a Parliamentary Select Committee to examine the country’s court case backlog, which he said stands at approximately 11 lakhs of cases, and to recommend measures to improve the efficiency of the judicial system.

He said the proposal had been submitted to the Speaker and was aimed at strengthening judicial independence, the rule of law, and democratic governance. (Newswire)
