Govt orders probe into SLPP General Secretary’s remarks on IGP

Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala says an investigation has been ordered into remarks made by SLPP General Secretary Attorney-at-Law Sagara Kariyawasam regarding Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya.

Addressing a media briefing, Kariyawasam urged the current IGP to “serve the State and the people instead of the government” and claimed he did not want the 37th IGP to “go down in history as an IGP beaten to death by people on the street.”

Responding to the statement, Minister Wijepala said the government would not treat the remarks lightly and had instructed authorities to conduct an immediate investigation.

He alleged that the comments reflected the mindset of a political movement that had previously sacrificed the public for political power and described the remarks as irresponsible.

The Minister further said the current IGP was carrying out his duties efficiently and suggested the statement was made by individuals who were fearful due to ongoing investigations into corruption, bribery and the alleged misuse of public property.

Wijepala said appropriate action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation. (Newswire)
