Heavy showers above 50 mm forecast in several areas

Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is likely in parts of Sri Lanka as showers and thundershowers are forecast across several provinces, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Several spells of showers are expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.

A few showers are also expected in the North Western Province.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may develop at several locations in the Northern, North Central, Uva and Eastern provinces after 2 p.m., with rainfall exceeding 50 mm possible in some areas.

The public has been advised to take precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The forecast was issued at 5:30 a.m. on Sept. 12.
