13-year-old boy dies after firework explodes

A 13-year-old boy has died in a firework-related accident during an annual religious festival at a temple in the Valachchenai area of Batticaloa, police said.

The boy, a resident of Kulakkadu in Kiran, was attending the night festival at around 11 p.m. on Friday (11) when the accident occurred.

A firework lit during the festival had reportedly failed to explode properly and was removed from the site.

The boy was injured when the firework suddenly exploded as he approached it to look at it, police said.

He was immediately admitted to the Valachchenai Hospital for treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.

Valachchenai Police are conducting further investigations into the incident. (Newswire)
