SJB announces Sept. 24 Colombo protest against 22A

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) will launch a public mobilisation and peaceful protest in Colombo on September 24 against the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa announced.

Premadasa made the announcement while addressing a meeting of SJB local government members and electorate organisers from the Colombo District at the Opposition Leader’s Office.

He accused the government of attempting to undermine democracy, judicial independence and the rule of law through the proposed constitutional amendment, saying the SJB had been among the first to oppose it.

Premadasa claimed the amendment was an attempt to establish one-party rule and centralise political power in Pelawatte, describing it as a serious challenge facing the country.

He said the government’s 159 seats in Parliament should not allow it to undermine the rights of Sri Lanka’s population, and pledged to build a broad public movement against the amendment.

The Opposition Leader said the September 24 protest would be the SJB’s biggest step yet in its campaign to defeat the 22nd Amendment and claimed it would mark the beginning of a broader effort to bring about a change in government. (Newswire)
