Uganda to Colombo: Customs discovers unusual ‘inside baggage’

A 43-year-old Ugandan national has been intercepted at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) after allegedly attempting to smuggle cocaine into Sri Lanka by swallowing capsules containing the drug, Sri Lanka Customs said.

The suspect, a farmer by profession, arrived at BIA on Qatar Airways flight QR664 in the early hours of Sunday (13), after travelling from Entebbe, Uganda, via Doha.

Customs said officers of its Narcotics Control Unit selected the passenger for further examination based on intelligence and risk profiling.

During the subsequent investigation, 13 capsules containing suspected cocaine were recovered from inside his body.

The capsules had a total gross weight of approximately 161 grams, with the cocaine estimated to have a street value of around Rs. 7.24 million.

Customs said there is suspicion that the passenger may have swallowed additional capsules containing narcotics, and medical procedures are continuing under the required safety and legal protocols.

The suspect and the recovered narcotics were handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigation and legal action. (Newswire)
