Rs. 7. 15 Bn hospital projects to strengthen Northern and Eastern healthcare

The foundation stone for new hospital buildings in Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Mullaitivu, and Mannar, with an investment of Rs. 7,148 million, will be laid on Wednesday (16) under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

The initiative, supported by loan assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Government of India, aims to strengthen the health system and expand treatment services in the Northern, North Central, and Eastern provinces. 

According to the Health Ministry, the ceremony will be attended by Minister of Health and Media Nalinda Jayatissa, provincial governors, and senior officials.

At the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital, an eight‑storey cardiac treatment complex costing Rs. 3,545 million will be built, equipped with coronary care and critical care units, catheter laboratories, wards, clinics, laboratories, library, auditorium, X‑ray, ECG, and other modern facilities.

At the Trincomalee District General Hospital, another eight‑storey cardiac treatment complex costing Rs. 2,403 million will be constructed under JICA loan assistance, with similar advanced facilities for cardiac diagnosis and treatment.

The Mannar District General Hospital will see the construction of a modern emergency accident and treatment unit complex at a cost of Rs. 600 million, while the Mullaitivu District General Hospital will receive a four‑storey ward complex costing Rs. 600 million, designed to ease patient congestion.

The projects at Mannar and Mullaitivu hospitals will be funded under Indian loan assistance amounting to Rs. 1,200 million, with Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha scheduled to attend the ceremonies. 

JICA’s Chief Representative in Sri Lanka Shigeo Honzu and Japanese Ambassador Akio Isomata will also participate.

The Health Ministry added that the projects will allow people living in areas far from Colombo to obtain specialised cardiac and emergency treatment quickly and free of charge within their own regions. (Newswire)
