Airbus probe: Namal Rajapaksa remanded until September 23

Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa was ordered to remain in remand custody until September 23 by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today (16), after being produced as a suspect in an investigation into the alleged misuse of approximately US$2 million during the procurement of Airbus aircraft by SriLankan Airlines.

The court also ordered that its decision on Rajapaksa’s bail application be delivered on September 23.

Rajapaksa, who is currently in remand custody, was produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today in connection with the investigation. He was recently named as a suspect in a money laundering case linked to alleged financial irregularities surrounding SriLankan Airlines’ aircraft procurement process.

Following submissions made by Deputy Solicitor General Janaka Bandara on behalf of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and a legal team led by President’s Counsel Anil Silva representing Rajapaksa, Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena issued the order.

The money laundering investigation is related to the controversial 2013 SriLankan Airlines Airbus procurement. Rajapaksa was named as a suspect following instructions from the Attorney General after investigators submitted material relating to the case. (Newswire)
