Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Prasanna Gunasena has thanked railway officers and employees who continued working during the ongoing trade union action to maintain train services as much as possible.

Gunasena said 187 train journeys were operated on Thursday (17), despite the strike.

He also commended the staff who contributed to operating services to Jaffna, including the Yal Devi express, on Friday (18), and those who returned to work after initially joining the trade union action.

The deputy minister said some officers had remained on duty for nearly 24 hours to maintain services while giving priority to passenger safety.

He also said certain operations that normally require a large number of employees were carried out with a limited number of staff during the strike.

Gunasena described the continued work of the officers and employees during the industrial action as a contribution to maintaining public services and thanked them for their efforts. (Newswire)
